South Africa’s first Grüner Veltliner wine is produced by Diemersdal, expertly crafted by Thys Louw. Since this wine sells out so quickly, I phoned Diemersdal when I was in the area to confirm that they have tasting samples available of the Grüner Veltliner – that was my main interest at the time. Needless to say, we enjoyed a dozen Sauvignon Blancs alongside the Grüner Veltliner, which stood out so much that I immediately ordered some.
Grüner Veltliner is an Austrian grape variety and only a handful of producers of this grape variety can be found in South Africa. Diemersdal has the perfect terroir for this grape variety and they use the traditional yeast that is used in Austria for this wine production.
In the glass, it has a light-yellow to green colour with a slight golden hue. It is very forthcoming with notes of tropical fruit, grapefruit and spices. It is extremely fresh and vibrant on the palate, with medium complexity of sweet melon, lime, white pear and white pepper. It has a good acidity with a rocky mineral finish. It is the ideal wine for Sauvignon Blanc lovers who are looking for something new.
This wine will pair well with fresh asparagus, broccoli, kale and cabbage dishes. I can also imagine it working extremely well with a creamy risotto or pasta. This is not the type of wine that should spend too much time on the shelf and should be enjoyed chilled well.
