A fortified wine that is 92 years old! Yet, it tastes amazing! The sediments in this wine are flaky and can be strained easily. Once you have those out of the way, you end up with a medium brown wine with a deep brown centre and a deep yellow rim. On the nose, this wine is neutral and slightly shy with hints of muscat, raisins, cedarwood and roasted nuts. Although not indicated on the label, the wine is probably high in alcohol and, when you smell this wine, it is advised that you bring the glass to your nose slowly. On the palate, it balances well with much fruitiness and it kept a good acidity. Notes of honey, rooibos tea, and raisins are prominent, with a savoury and toffee hint among the sweet finish. It lingers for a while and let you smile for even longer.
Although this wine was produced in 1930, it spent 8 years in wooden barrels and was only bottled for the first time in 1938. A few of these bottles came up at international auctions and are available from some dealers in South Africa. Whether you drink it now or keep it as an investment, it will be a good buy. This wine will probably remain good for another 50 years if stored well. What a privilege!
