It is interesting that, in South Africa, you have to specify Grenache Rosé, whereas in France, most Rosé's are made from Grenache. Piekenierskloof is one of a handful producers making use of Grenache in their Rosé and it is a fantastic dry Rosé! I had a few people puzzled at my last tasting when I paired this Rosé with carpaccio. Some people approached me and said that they have never heard of Rosé with carpaccio. Afterwards, they told me what a wonderful pairing it was and how the rocket and black pepper complimented the strawberry notes of the wine. I was smiling all the way.
In your glass, this wine has a slight peach colour with a light salmon pink hue. On the nose you get strong elements of strawberry and cherry. This follows through on the palate, with strawberry, cherry, raspberry and some watermelon (just imagine how well that blended with the pepperiness of the rocket, black pepper and parmesan!). It finishes off with a light and fresh rose petal aftertaste that lingers for a while.
This is a diverse Rosé: ideal for a serious pairing or for just easy drinking – you decide! It is elegant but positions itself firmly in the Rosé category, and I can present it with confidence!
