The name, "Seriously Old Dirt", is either something that makes you smile if you know it already, something that puts you off if you do not understand the context, or something that will intrigue you if you are an explorer in wines. I must be honest: there was a time where I confused this wine for another wine that has the taste profile of pure dirt. Fortunately, this confusion did not last long: I was wondering about the label of the Vilafonté Series M and Series C, and came across the explanation of the 'seriously old dirt' in which the vines were planted. I must mention that much effort was done with the packaging and label of these wines.
In the glass, I had a deep garnet colour with some tinges of purple. The wine was not shy and presented notes of plum and blackberry on the nose with some hints of vanilla. It enters the palate smoothly and it is as if the wine wants to display all its characteristics gradually: it develops well on a balanced palate with plums, blackberry, blackcurrant, tobacco, sweet spices, nuts, liquorice and minerality. It certainly is a complex, full-bodied wine with subtle hints of fruits and spices. I can imagine that it will pair excellently with lamb dishes, but this is the type of wine that I would rather want to drink on its own to experience all that it offers. It has a long and soft finish of perfume and minerality, indeed a great wine. Only 330 barrels of this wine was produced.
