When you go into a shop and you are looking for a Muscadel, you will probably come across the Allesverloren Muscadel. When you stand at a fortified wine shelf in a wine store, you will see rows of Allesverloren Muscadel. There is a good reason for that: this fortified wine is ubiquitous and popular as an aperitif or dessert wine among many South Africans, and it comes at a great price and ageing potential.
In the glass, it has a bright deep red colour with a light pink hue on the rim. It has a bold smell of raspberry, mulberry and rooibos tea. On the palate, it has a sweet entry and a firm distribution all over the palate at first. The red fruits, Turkish delight, rooibos and honey then develops. These flavours linger for a long time.
For a long time, I was not a huge fan of any fortified wine because the added wine spirit was just too overwhelming for me. With the 2021 vintage of Allesverloren, my immediate reaction was that it was very well integrated and that the wine was much more balanced from what I have experienced before.
This wine can be served well chilled with a huge variety of foods, probably the best with some Roquefort cheese and biscuits. It has an ageing potential of 25 to 50 years. The cork can be replaced again after serving, so you can use this wine at various occasions. Ensure that it is stored upright in the cellar. Enjoy!
