Alto Rouge 2021

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Alto Rouge red blend is a quasi-Bordeaux-style red wine (it has a rather large component of Shiraz) from the Alto Estate in Stellenbosch. This wine is a popular go-to for many people due to its consistency and affordable price.

The five varieties for this wine have been vinified separately before blending and aged in 90% French oak barrels and 10% American oak barrels for 18 months. This wine has a medium garnet colour in the glass and is forthcoming on the nose with hints of red fruit, black fruit, violets and spices. On the palate, it offers some ripe fruit such as prunes, plums, blackberries and blueberries with hints of violets, green peppercorns and pine needles. It has a medium length finish that is dry. The tannins are medium with a slight grainy feel throughout.

This wine can be enjoyed on its own and will benefit from slight cooling. When served with food, it will go well with roasted chicken, a beef potjie, roast vegetables or a meaty pasta. It has the potential to age well within the next five years, up to 10 years.
