The Alvi’s Drift 221 Sauvignon Blanc is a wine with a story. We have friends who love watching their sport when we visit. I know practically nothing about sport, no matter how hard they try to educate me. Then they went to visit friends who took out a bottle of Alvi’s Drift from the 221 range and they asked me if I know this wine. I responded by telling them that it is a really good wine, named after Alvi van der Merwe who, at the age of 19, scored the first try on African soil against the All Blacks and he was selected as the 221st person to play for the Springboks. My friends were astonished about my ‘sport knowledge’. I guess that we can all learn a thing or two from a wine label!
Contrary to what one might think, this wine is not more expensive than the signature Sauvignon Blanc by Alvi’s Drift – it is a mere R100 a bottle for a really good wine from the warm Worcester area. It has a high sugar content for a Sauvignon Blanc, but you will never say. In the glass, you have a pale yellow wine with a green tinge. It has many tropical notes on the nose with some lemon zest. It has a soft entry with an elegant balance of fruit such as dried figs, gooseberries, lemon and dry straw. It has a fresh but soft finish of a tropical fruit salad. About 25% of this wine was wild yeast fermented, adding to the complexity of this wine.
This is a lovely Sauvignon Blanc, ideal for enjoying on its own but it will also work well with fish, chicken breasts, vegetables or a creamy pasta. The quality-price ratio of this wine is impressive. It should be served chilled well. I highly recommend this wine to all white wine lovers.
