Bacco Estate is one of the few South African wine estates that produces a single varietal Vermentino. This Italian grape variety is getting increased attention in France (in the Languedoc-Roussillon area) and many other parts of the world. It is not familiar to the South African wine drinker's palate but definitely a variety that one can get more familiar with, especially if you like food and wine pairings.
This wine has a light-yellow colour with a golden hue. On the nose it is clean and slightly shy, opening up delicate notes of lime, dried peach, white pear and perfume after a slight swirl. My first thoughts of tasting the wine were that it is light-bodied but well balanced. On the palate, it follows through from the nose with lemon zest, candied lemon peel and grapefruit. It has a soft and slightly oily mouthfeel, finishing off with a mineral salinity. The soft mouthfeel can also be a result of malolactic conversion and battonnage where the lees is stirred back into the juice for a rounded mouthfeel. It remains dry throughout and expresses itself well, but with a short length that calls for another sip.
This wine will pair well with a wide range of Italian dishes, specifically a pesto-based pasta, oysters, fritto misto, soft cheeses, and salads with fruit.
