Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2019

At our wine club, everyone knows that we try to explore as many as possible wines from as many as possible producers. However, after I served the 2017 Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage, members of the club drove me crazy for more! If you speak to any person and ask them what their favourite wine for the entire year was, it will be the Diesel Pinotage – without a doubt!

We received a message from someone the one day, saying that his friend is part of our club and talking non-stop about this wine. He wanted to know about the vintage and where to get it from. She then got it for her birthday. That is when I decided to serve the 2019 vintage at the Snob Talk event, comparing it with the basic Beyerskloof Pinotage. The moment that the people identified the Beyerskloof Pinotage, it was not hard to guess that the second glass will be the Diesel Pinotage. Some people started jumping up and down, slapping their partners from excitement, and it took me a moment to calm them all down before I could talk about the wine.

Maybe this wine does not require much talking? It is such a great wine, that it talks for itself. A new world style Pinotage that was matured in small new French oak barrels for 19 months. That, together with the malolactic conversion, contribute towards a super smooth and easy drinking wine but that holds a lot of complexity.

In the glass, it has a bright and deep dark red colour with a slightly purple hue on the edges. It is a forthcoming, full-bodied wine with aromas of black plum, dark cherries, spice, and a slight undertone of smokiness. It is an extremely elegant wine that develops well on the palate to give a full sensation of perfect harmony on the tongue. The tannins are well-rounded, and the fruit-forwardness of plums, blackberry, raspberry and pepper is great! It ends with a long lingering aftertaste of red fruit and sweet tobacco.

This wine should be served slightly chilled and will work well with lamb or beef and roasted vegetables. It is interesting to compare this flagship wine with the Beyerskloof Pinotage and the Beyerskloof Reserve Pinotage. Once you tasted this wine, you will understand why it stands proud in top positions at all the Pinotage award ceremonies. One should not leave this wine out among the most iconic wines in the country!
