Black Oystercatcher Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Writer: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

We went to visit friends who are huge fans of white wine, so I took a good bottle of white wine from the Elgin region along for dinner. Our friends were so excited to share a wine that they discovered with us, that my wine ended up in the fridge and I was introduced to the Black Oystercatcher Sauvignon Blanc. I was flabbergasted!

This wine has a clear appearance with a gold-green tinge. It is forthcoming on the nose with crisp tones of gooseberries, passion fruit, lime and green apples. On the palate, it is well-rounded and balanced. It has a crisp entry with tropical fruit notes as promised on the nose and a very 'inky' minerality. The minerality is what makes this wine so unique and gives it that extra nudge of complexity. It has a long, fresh finish of lime and fresh asparagus.

When I first tasted this wine, it immediately jumped into my top-5 white wines. I had to go and buy another bottle, taste it again – just to make sure. It was confirmed: this is a brilliant wine! I recently presented this wine to a mixed group of people, including some winemakers, and their first reactions were very similar to mine: it is great; where do we buy it? The good news is that this boutique wine farm distributes small quantities of their Sauvignon Blanc to Woolworths, so it is very easy to obtain some of this wine at a good price.

I recently paired this wine with fresh oysters and caviar – it was the perfect pairing! Whether you are feeling like a serious pairing or just some easy drinking, this is the ideal wine! It is unique and it ticks all the boxes! And to think that the winemaker was told that the most southern part of Africa is not ideal for vines... I am glad he did not listen! Bravo to Dirk Human for this fantastic wine!
