When I came across the Blacksmith Wines for the first time, it was evident that these wines are not your ordinary wines. A selection of wines with interesting labels, possibly inspired by tattoo art, at a reasonable price comprise the portfolio of Blacksmith Wines. The label signifies the unpretentiousness and simplicity of the wines. Although produced in South Africa, with reasonably small quantities available to the local market, a large portion of these wines are exported to Norway.
This wine followed a natural route of fermentation. In the glass, it has a very light red colour that is attractive. On the nose, red fruit, fresh strawberries and herbs make up the bouquet of this wine. It delivers well on the palate with strawberries, raspberries, fynbos, and a hint of earthiness. It has a short but fresh finish. For a long time, Cinsault has been the workhorse of South African red wines and it lost its status due to the way in which it was used to fill up expensive blends. However, thanks to modern day winemakers in South Africa, some really good Cinsault is made and they are actively working to restore the reputation of this promising grape variety in the country.
At R160, this wine, its story and difficulty to find at your average store, is a great wine for the adventurous person, looking for something different. It is an easy-drinking wine that can be enjoyed on its own, but it will also work well with oxtail or roasted beef and vegetables.
