The Rustenberg John X Merriman 2022 is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (20%), Malbec (11%) and Petit Verdot (6%) from one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. This wine offers excellent value for money in its category, and what stands out here is the absence of Cabernet Franc and the inclusion of Malbec, which adds depth and richness to the overall profile.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with classic notes of cassis, blackcurrant and dark fruit, supported by hints of cigar tobacco, sour cherry and subtle spice . On the palate, the wine develops very well, moving from a structured entry into a layered expression of dark berries, plum and spice, with touches of vanilla and oak from its 20 months in French oak (35% new). Additional nuances of violets, black tea and a slight mineral edge add further complexity . The tannins are fine and well integrated, giving the wine a serious structure and a long, persistent finish.
This is a well-balanced and structured wine that can be enjoyed now, but will reward ageing over the next 5 to 20 years. It is recommended to serve this wine in a slightly larger glass to allow it to open up fully. It will pair particularly well with richer meat dishes, especially those with some fat, or a traditional South African potjie.
