The Flag of Truce Pinotage is a new addition to the Bruce Jack Heritage Collection and, just like the Chenin Blanc and Shiraz that I have tasted before, this wine does not disappoint. This new addition and work with the Pinotage variety certainly has the potential to shake a few of its counterparts.
The grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard in the Breedekloof and it was partly produced with carbonic maceration, whole-bunch fermentation and sun-dried stems that were added back during maturation. The vineyard is one of the most awarded Pinotage vineyards in the world. This wine was oaked for 12 months.
In the glass, it has a deep red to garnet colour with a purple rim due to its young age. It has a rich and complex nose, with red flowers, ripe strawberries, ripe plums, mulberry, stewed pears and banana. The complexity that it offers does not immediately follow through on the palate, maybe because this wine is still young and needs to breathe a bit. Over time, it did develop well in the glass and changed on the palate. It had a complex palate of ripe red cherries, mulberry, plums, flowers, strawberries and perfume against a fresh acidity and fine tannins. It finished with a herbaceous bitterness and red fruit.
This wine will benefit a slight chill. I advise that the bottle is opened at least 30 minutes before drinking. It can be best enjoyed on its own, or with some beef roast and vegetables. It is an extraordinary wine that should be tried out.
