Deetlefs Signature Viognier 2019

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Deetlefs Signature Viognier is one of those viogniers that raise eyebrows at a tasting. This is because it is different, it is bold, and it is complex. Viognier is not for everyone, but if you like this grape variety, you might want to try this one out.

In the glass, it has a deep gold yellow colour. On the nose, it has some notes of cut apple, white pear, spices, jasmine and petroleum. It has a good acidity and a complex concentration of flavours on the palate, with apricot, honey and stewed fruit developing on the mid-palate. It has a savoury finish.

This is a good wine but it comes at a steep price. However, it offers value for money. The labels are handwritten. It will pair well with roast chicken, poached salmon or a slightly more spicy dish such as a curry. It has the necessary complexity and acidity to cut through many food flavours and be a good companion to them. This wine should be served chilled. It is available from Partners in Wine.
