This phenomenal collaboration between Delheim in South Africa and Hammel in Germany resulted in a great and aromatic but dry Riesling from two producers that have a long history of learning from one another and sharing ideas. Christoph Hammel worked under the patriarch of Delheim, Spatz Sperling. It can be considered as the best of both worlds and a wine praised by critics since its maiden release.
This wine has a light-yellow colour with a green-gold tinge. It is forthcoming on the nose with notes of lime, lemon, white peaches and white flowers. It delivers exactly that on the palate with an overall dry profile, but very aromatic and zesty. It finishes off with stone fruit notes, a hint of honey and a floral character.
The label of this wine is extremely funky, made for a new generation of wine drinkers. It has been fermented in French oak and Acacia barrels. Contrary to what one might expect of a collaboration between Delheim and Germany, this wine is surprisingly dry. It will be served best chilled well.
This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with roasted poultry, kabeljou or a light mushroom pasta. It is ready to drink now or within the next five years. This is a must-try for Riesling-lovers.
