I recently presented this Maury 1937 at the Decanter Wine Club and I was surprised how open everyone was to drink a vintage from before the Second World War! And what a great wine it is! In fact, I regret opening it so soon. This wine spent more than 50 years in barrels and demi-john glass jars. It was bottled in 2005 and comes with a certificate of authenticity, packed in a wooden case.
This wine has a brick red to brown colour in the glass, it is forthcoming on the nose with fruit, nuts and spices. The tannins are flaky and easy to filter out. On the palate, it has beautiful notes of plums, prunes, dried fruit, caramel, cherry cola, vanilla and Christmas spices. There is also a slight hint of white pepper in the background. This is a brilliant wine with a good acidity, sweetness and alcohol level.
It is a great dessert wine that can be enjoyed on its own. It can be served chilled well. It does not need to be decanted but the tannin flakes need to be filtered out.
