The Dorp Street Merlot is a popular, easy-drinking wine that is part of the collaboration between Neels Barnardt and John Boyes, working with Carrol Boyes to create a unique range of wines. This wine is called Dorp Street, paying tribute to the most famous and oldest street in Stellenbosch. The label is striking with its unique design, showing a map of the lower parts of Stellenbosch and Dorp street running through the label.
In the glass, this wine has a light ruby colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with notes of red fruits, hinting towards strawberries and red cherries. It is fresh on the palate with low tannins. The wine is medium-bodied with strawberries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries and oak spice. However, the fruitiness does not last long and the finish is earthy in nature. The lack of structure in this wine can possibly be ascribed to the carbonic maceration which was implemented when this wine was fermented.
The fruit-forwardness and simplicity of this wine would make it a popular mainstream wine and the price of the wine is well in line with what you get. This wine could be paired with a steak or potjiekos.
