The Du Toitskloof Old Vine Sauvignon Blanc is part of the Legacy range of Du Toitskloof and should not be confused with their Heritage range Sauvignon Blanc. The vines for this Sauvignon Blanc were planted in 1985 and are certified old vines. This is probably the first element that adds to the brilliant complexity of this wine. Free run juice was frozen to separate grape must and water, in order to obtain a more concentrated must. Thereafter, the juice was fermented for 100 days on the lees. A good three years in the bottle gave us what I am about to describe below.
In the glass, this wine had a bright gold-yellow colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with tropical fruit flavours of guava and pineapple. On the palate, it started with a soft, waxy mouthfeel but still with a very fresh acidity and much fruitiness. Green notes of green melon and kiwi starts to introduce the other tropical fruits: guava, litchi and pineapple. This wine has an immense complexity, but the bold complexity is elegant and not overpowering, making this a very diverse wine. The complexity of this wine convinced most people at my recent tasting that this wine was a Chardonnay – I think there might still be some who do not believe me that this is actually a Sauvignon Blanc!
This wine will go exceptionally well on its own or with a creamy chicken and brussel sprouts. It should be served chilled and has the potential to easily age for another 10 years! This is a much-awarded wine from Du Toitskloof and certainly a must-try Sauvignon Blanc for both the enthusiast and the connoisseur. I am curious to see how this wine will develop over time and I cannot wait for my next glass.
