I tasted the Elmie Rosé among 12 other South African Rosé wines and, initially, I was not very excited when I saw that it is a Pinotage Rosé. However, this wine stood out so much that I immediately started to find out where I can get more of this fantastic wine. It is a very elegant wine – think in the direction of a Chardonnay – but with a good acidity and freshness.
This wine has an amber colour with a pink blush and some rose gold hues. It presents a medium complexity on the nose with lemon, grapefruit, strawberries and sweet spices. On the palate, it has a soft entry that brings forward the grapefruit, watermelon, strawberry and lemon flavours. It has a fresh finish with a slightly sweet reminiscence of zesty candies. It remains fresh just long enough before the next sip. The winemakers managed to throw the taste profile of Pinotage around and make something rather unique from this diverse grape variety.
This wine is named after and made in memory of Elmie Terblanche-Smit who had a long battle with cancer. It is a good wine that was recently favoured by the people who attended the tasting and I look forward to present some more of this Rosé at future tastings.
