Graham Beck Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon (Lost City) 2002

A friend of mine gave me this wine to assess because she was not sure if the wine is still good - it was not stored correctly. I believe that these wines were given to patrons who stayed at Sun City twenty years ago.

In preparation for decanting, I let it lie flat for a week. The bottle was kept in a decanting cradle to hopefully gather some of the sediments in the shoulders of the bottle. It was decanted before serving (slightly chilled) and the majority of sediments remained behind in the bottle. The synthetic cork probably contributed towards preserving the wine aginst the background of the incorrect storing of the wine.

The colour of the wine was a pale tawny and no sediments in the glass. The wine was not shy on the nose, it presented some fruity flavours of plum and blackberries. It was well-balanced on the palate with smooth tannins, fruit-forward aromas delivering on palate what it promised on the nose, and well-integrated acidity. The tabacco and pepper notes are also well in balance.

Although this wine was not stored correctly, it endured the circumstances and maintained its character. I really enjoyed it and recommended to my friend that she opens the other bottles within the next 18 months.
