I became aware of the Great Heart range when a friend, Jaco Sieberhagen, informed me that the logo for this range will be from one of his steel sculptures. I am quite fascinated by the wine farms that commission artists to design something for their labels, or use existing artworks on their labels. In the case of the Great Heart range, the wines bear a beautiful and meaningful artwork by Sieberhagen whose works have been exhibited all over the world and are in public places in several countries.
There is more of a story to this wine! The Great Heart range is a branch of the Mullineux & Leeu wines but all the proceeds of the wines from this range go to the workers on the farm. Now that is investing in a community!
What is inside the bottle is just as pleasing as the story behind the wine. The grapes were sourced from the Swartland, known for its great quality Chenin Blanc vines in granite soils that are nearly or over 40 years old. Because the vines are bush vines, the grapes were harvested by hand. By the time it appears in your glass, a significant amount of effort went into the production of this wine.
In your glass, it is as a pale yellow colour and slightly shy on the nose. You pick up some canned fruits, stewed apricots, lemon, lime and a flint minerality. It is a bone dry Chenin Blanc that is strikingly fresh, well-balanced with a direct acidity. Stone fruit and green apples develop on the palate and ends with a silky honey aftertaste and a hint of minerality.
This wine is a nice and fresh wine to drink at any occasion and should be served chilled. It will go well with poultry dishes and mild curries. This is a true value-for-money wine and supporting a great cause. This wine is vegan friendly.
