Groot Constantia Grand Constance 2017

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

Before you even serve a Grand Constance from Groot Constantia, it makes a good impression. It is presented in a wooden box with wooden shavings on the inside. The bottle has a unique, hand-blown shape and the cork is sealed with wax.

This wine has an amber colour with a hint of rose gold. In addition to the prominent Muscat flavours that are presented on the nose, this wine has a forthcoming smell of dried peaches and raisins. Upon entry, it is soft on the palate with a rounded mouthfeel and a good balance between acidity and fruitiness. Flavours of honey, sweet spices and dried fruit develop on the palate against a good backdrop of a fresh acidity. It finishes with hints of pineapple and smoked spices.

This wine should be chilled well before serving. It is the iconic wine from Groot Constantia that was favoured by some big names, including Napoleon who was a fan of the Constantia wines. It should not be confused with the Vin de Constance of Klein Constantia. When you visit the Groot Constantia farm, you will find the vineyards of this wine right next to the historic manor house. Although it is not part of their tasting menu, this wine is highly recommended for any occasion. It will work perfect as an aperitif or a dessert wine with sweet desserts or a cheese platter.
