The Groote Post Pinch of Salt Chardonnay 2023 is probably one of the most unusual Chardonnays you will taste from South Africa. The name “Pinch of Salt” refers to the three different fermentation methods used in its making: 50% stainless steel, 30% French oak and 20% amphorae. Taking a portion from each vessel, as if adding pinches of salt, results in a unique combination of freshness, depth and texture. The white wines from Groote Post are known for their saline character, thanks to the vineyards’ proximity to the West Coast, and this wine proudly carries that coastal signature too. It is not wildly different, but certainly interesting and distinctive.

In the glass, it has a light yellow colour. The nose is subtle, with hints of citrus and tropical fruit rather than the more conventional buttery or oaky Chardonnay notes. On the palate, it is complex and layered with flavours of lemon, lime, pineapple and stone fruit. The entry is soft, followed by a lively burst of citrus. The pineapple drifts into the background as the saline notes emerge on the finish. The wine has a medium-long finish and remains fresh throughout.

This is a refined and well-balanced Chardonnay that will pair beautifully with seafood or light pasta dishes. It is more of a food wine than a stand-alone sipper, but it will certainly spark conversation around the table. Serve chilled and enjoy its coastal freshness.
