The Hartenberg Riesling 2025 is a dry Riesling from Stellenbosch, produced by one of the few South African estates that continue to work consistently with this variety. As Riesling becomes increasingly scarce locally, this wine stands out as both a reliable and well-priced example. For those expecting a sweet, German-style Riesling, this will surprise, but for those who enjoy the floral, spicy and complex nature of the variety in a dry style, this is a strong offering.
In the glass, it has a pale yellow colour. The nose is fresh and expressive with notes of citrus fruit, flowers and spice. On the palate, it opens with orange zest and hints of lime, supported by a vibrant acidity and a well-balanced, lower alcohol structure. Jasmine and floral tones carry through, while additional notes of green apple, white peach and subtle spice develop on the mid-palate. A slightly waxy mouthfeel adds texture, balanced by a firm and clean acidity. It finishes well with a fresh line of minerality.
This is a well-made and versatile Riesling that is ready to drink now and offers very good value for money. It should be served well chilled in a smaller white wine glass. It can be enjoyed on its own or paired with food such as Thai green curry, duck breast or wood-smoked chicken.
