The Jan Harmsgat wines are among our favourite go-to wines for all occasions and we bought several of their wines before. The one day I saw a Jan Harmsgat Chenin Blanc and I thought by myself: "Wow! They added a new variety to their portfolio!" I was so excited, I contacted them right away and wanted to order some to try it. Their marketing manager informed me that the Chenin Blanc was nothing new to their portfolio, it has always been there. However, it turned out to be one of their most popular wines and is therefore often sold out quickly. When I first tasted their Chenin Blanc, I could understand why.
The Jan Harmsgat Chenin Blanc 2020 vintage is one of the best balanced Chenin Blancs I've had in a long time. The light yellow colour makes this wine to appear very fresh and the aromas on the nose are not shy to bring forth the fruitiness of this wine. It ticks all the boxes of peaches, honeycomb, white flowers, quince, apples and a zippy acidity. It has a long-lasting aftertaste that develops on the palate.
This wine was presented at a blind Chenin Blanc-focused tasting among some of the top Chenin Blancs from the same area. This one was by far the most popular. Being impressed with the wine itself, many people were holding their breaths when they realised that some Chenin Blancs out there feature in the R500-R700 price class. However, the Jan Harmsgat came at a surprising R145 - a steal for a wine of this quality. This is also now on our list of go-to Chenin Blancs and a must-try if you haven't had it before!
