JC le Roux Le Domaine Sparkling Wine NV

The JC le Roux Le Domaine Sparkling Wine is probably one of the most popular sparkling wines in the country. I recently presented this wine at a tasting and a large group of people could immediately identify it as a JC le Roux sparkling wine. The largest majority at the tasting preferred this wine above the Champagne that was used for comparison!

Every ribbon is added by hand and the bottle displays impressively. In the glass, it has a light-yellow colour with a green tinge at the brim. The bubbles are lively and inviting. On the nose, it appears fresh, with citrus, stone fruit and muscat spices. It delivers well on the palate with an elegant entry. The bubbles are not refined, but it does not disturb the harmony on the palate, that is sweet lemon, lime, ripe tropical fruit and muscat. It remains sweet throughout and has a short finish of fruit. It is overall not very complex but rather simple and straightforward. One could say that the best characteristics of the two grape varieties (Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadel) are displayed in this wine.

Although it does not enjoy the same status as Cap Classique, the JC le Roux sparkling wines are household brands for most South Africans. The alcohol on this wine is low, as the temperature is dropped to freezing point when an alcohol of 7.5% is reached. This wine comes at a really affordable price and is worth a try if you prefer something sweet. It is mostly enjoyed on its own, served chilled well, but can also make a good accompaniment for seafood, pasta and a wide variety of other dishes. It can even be served as a drink with dessert or a cheeseboard.
