Kranskop is known for an unusual grape variety, well-known in Uruguay, that they plant in Robertson, South Africa: Tannat. The MCT Selection is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat – it is their flagship wine. It has a deep garnet red colour with a slight purple tinge. On the nose, it is intense and complex with notes of black fruit, pepper, sweet spices, cloves, leather and hints of red fruit. Upon entry, it has strong notes of red fruits that is immediately followed by a dry and intense structure of firm tannins, black fruits, leather and tobacco. Hints of perfume develop over time, followed by a minerality finish.
This wine is well structured and ideal for pairing with red meat, black olives and strong cheeses. What is particularly interesting is that the Merlot, although high in quantity, is not prominent on the palate. Instead, you get more of the intense fruitiness and structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. It is a good and unique blend that is definitely worth a try and it comes at a really good price.
I strongly suggest that this bottle is slightly chilled and decanted for more than one hour before serving.
