Lost Boy Marea Sauvignon Blanc 2024

The Lost Boy Marea is compared by many as the Nesos of South Africa. Making only 250 bottles of this superb wine, it is not only a novelty of the process but with a real proof in the taste! The Italian word “Marea” refers to tide, with a process inspired by an Italian intern and that is not likely to be repeated, the grapes for this wine were macerated in the Atlantic Ocean for 3 weeks. This is a process that was already invented by the Ancient Romans 2,500 years ago to remove the waxy blooms of the grape skins. However, for the experimental Trevor DeRuisé, this was a process to enhance the flavour and increase the alcohol levels of the wine through an unusual, yet natural process.

In the glass, this wine has a pale-yellow to gold colour. It is very forthcoming on the nose, with tropical fruit, citrus and blossom notes. It delivers well on the palate, with a good acidity, lemon, lime, gooseberries, granadilla, white pear and quince on the palate. There are also hints of seaweed, stone minerality and blackcurrant coming through. The flavours are overall intense, but beautifully balanced in the wine. It has a long, mineral finish that leave you lingering for more.

Due to the scarcity and unique production methods of this wine, I would suggest that it is enjoyed on its own, and placed at the beginning of a line-up. It should be served ice cold and has an ageing potential of 6+ years. If you can get your hands on this extremely limited edition wine, go for it without any hesitation!
