Louisvale V Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Louisvale V Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon is a special edition wine from this winery at the foot of the Stellenbosch Mountains. Stellenbosch is known as the best site in South Africa, if not the world, to plant Cabernet Sauvignon. To top this, Louisvale selects 5 of their best barrels to blend into this fantastic wine. What I most admire about this wine is that I tasted it among hundreds of other wines at the same occasion, and every time it stands out without being that extremely tannic, big and bold wine.

It is a very approachable wine, made with elegance but complexity. In the glass, it has a deep ruby colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with black berries, plums, leather, cedar, cigar box and sweet spices. The first sip is extremely elegant, fruit-forward, with the richness of the wine developing on the mid-palate in terms of blackcurrant, plums, leather, cedar, sweet spices, cigar box and dark chocolate. As has a good alcohol level and perfect acidity to keep everything well in balance, and the tannins providing a solid structure to the wine. It has a long-lingering finish that is fresh, with blackcurrant and spices.

This is an extremely successful blend by Louisvale, a wine worth trying and – for the quality you get – real value for money. This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with a ribeye steak. It does not need to be chilled or decanted, depending on your preference. I absolutely adore this wine and look forward to see how it will age over time. At the moment, it is showing the potential to age for a good ten years or more.
