The Lowerland Tolbos Tannat is certainly one of my best findings for the year. This Uruguayan grape variety is a scarce find in South Africa and Lowerland is one of a handful of producers of Tannat. The farm is located close to the Orange River and certified for their organic vinification.
This wine has a very dark garnet colour in the glass. It is very forthcoming with ripe black fruit on the nose and hints of tobacco leaf. This wine is very fruit-forward on the palate with ripe black cherries, red cherries, black liquorice, and vanilla. It develops further with notes of cardamom chocolate, espresso and tobacco leaf. The tannins are soft and the wine has a good acidity. The finish is more herbaceous, with a note of tomato leaf.
The Lowerland Tannat is grown in the Northern Cape with a warm and dry overall climate, producing jammy and fruity wines that are low in acidity. However, this wine is excelling in this terroir, with a high acidity that works together with the fruit towards a fine balanced wine. For people who appreciate a good glass of wine, or for those who like their casual glass of red wine, I cannot think of something better to enjoy. But the serious wine connoisseur will be evenly impressed. This wine will pair well with barbecue ribs, beef roast or Gorgonzola cheese. The price class of this wine is mid-range and certainly worth every cent.
