The unwooded Chenin Blanc from Montpellier is an overall good seller. The farm, located just outside Tulbagh is a beautiful farm with spectacular views and a great garden and function venue. I was recently sitting at the tasting spot at the back of their function venue, sampling their variety of Cap Classiques and white wines. After De Wet Theron ripped out all the Cinsault there in 1945, Chenin Blanc was one of the first varieties to be planted at Montpellier, also known as Spyseniersberg ("chef's mountain").
This wine has a straw yellow to light-golden colour in the glass. On the nose, it offers a bouquet of yellow flowers, dried peaches, tropical fruit and oriental spices. It delivers well on the palate from the nose, with fresh lemon, lime, pineapple, guava, dried peaches, fresh apricots, honeysuckle, green melon and a hint of spiciness. As the fruitiness subsides, a quick entry of wasabi and ginger come through on the back palate, finishing off with a fresh minerality.
This wine should be served chilled well. It is ready to drink now, but I will be curious to know how the tertiary notes will interact with the fruit profile of this wine when it was aged for ten years or so. This wine will go well with sushi or seafood.
