This is one of the terroir specific Chenin Blancs from Mullineux (the others were planted in quartz, shist and iron) and is an ideal wine for exploring the influence of soil on wine. Only 3240 bottles of this wine were produced and it is therefore difficult to get hold of these wines – also because they are extremely popular and have a good ageing potential of up to 20 years.
I experienced this wine as more aromatic and flinty than some of its counterparts. It has a light and clear straw colour with some green tinges. On the nose, it is complex with hints of lime, quince and green herbs. It delivers well on the palate with a good acidity, a balanced mouthfeel and fruitiness: lime, lemon, white lemon, quince, beeswax and honeycomb. It has a prominent flinty character (from the granite) that develops on the palate into a long lingering aftertaste.
The Granite Chenin Blanc from Mullineux is a unique wine that was made with much care to achieve a great concentration and a perfect balance. It can hardly be compared with a large portion of other South African Chenin Blancs. It has a good ageing potential and will go well with veal, pork and mild soft cheeses. Serve well chilled.
