Mullineux Quartz Chenin Blanc "Leliefontein" 2019

Writer: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

When I decided to present this wine at one of our tastings, it was a mission to get hold of it! It is an extremely popular, scarce and limited (2880 bottles) wine. But the effort to get your hands on one of these will certainly be rewarded!

This wine has a clear straw colour with green tinges. It is slightly shy on the nose with some delicate aromas of citrus, white lemon and almonds. There are hints of a flinty minerality and perfume evident in this wine. It has a good acidity and structure, well balanced on the palate with white pears, citrus and oatmeal coming forward first. It develops quickly into a much softer mouthfeel with prominent beeswax and honeycomb on the middle palate. It lingers for a while and finishes off with the flinty minerality and perfume. This wine is much more delicate and creamy than what one might expect.

For tasting the influence of terroir on white wines, this wine is a great choice together with some of the other terroir specific Chenin Blancs from Mullineux (iron, schist and granite). It comes from the ideal area for the grape variety (Swartland) and expresses the flavours of Chenin Blanc from this area extremely well. If you are a fan of Chenin Blanc and ready for something slightly different, this is the wine for you! It has an ageing potential of up to 20 years and will pair well with poultry dishes and medium spicy food.
