Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

I was given this bottle of Nederburg to review. It comes from the Nederburg auction which is at the top of the Nederburg range and is on offer to some fortunate patrons at Verdicchio Restaurant and Wine Cellar in Montecasino. These wines are limited editions from private bins, made by hand and have exceptional ageing potential. The wine was made from free run juice, fermented in small tanks, and aged in French, Hungarian and American barrels.

Upon first inspection, I could not pick up any sediments in the bottle – and it was like that when the bottle was finished as well. That indicates three things to me: the wine was made well, it was kept well and it was stored well. I chilled this wine to about 18 degrees Celsius before serving.

The cork seemed fine from the outside and I gave it a try with a waiter's friend. Unfortunately, the cork crumbled into pieces. I managed to remove most of the smaller bits and pushed the remaining cork through. It was not necessary to filter any further.

In the glass, it had a deep ruby colour with hints of brown tinges indicating age. It was the same on the nose, where the oak notes and cigar box notes are still slightly noticeable amidst the full fruity notes of plum, blackcurrant, blackberry, and green bell pepper. The tannins were rounded but still gripping, giving the mouthfeel of a complex Cabernet Sauvignon. It also retained a good acidity that contributes to a good balance on the palate.

I enjoyed this wine without food but it would still work well with some red meat dishes and roasted vegetables. It is difficult to say what this wine will do in the next 5-10 years but I would say that it now is the optimal drinking time.
