The Neethlingshof Maria Noble Late Harvest is a tribute to Maria Marais, a feisty widow who took over the building of the estate’s manor house – which is a national monument today – after her husband, Charles, passed away in 1813. It is made from Weisser Riesling and only 2630 bottles were produced.
In the glass, this wine has a rich gold colour. It is forthcoming on the nose with some stone fruit, citrus and honey. On the palate, the entry is elegant with notes of ripe peaches, dried apricots, white flowers, lemon zest, honey, orange rind and walnuts. It does not come across as overly sweet and has a good balance between the sugar, acidity and alcohol. The finish if of orange marmalade with a good, sweet finish.
This wine is best served chilled well. It can function as both a great apéritif or dessert wine, pairing well with fresh fruit or light desserts. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for the next 30+ years. It will work well in a line-up of Neethlingshof’s Gewürztraminer and Malbec.
