Niel Joubert Reserve Grenache Blanc 2019

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Niel Joubert Reserve Grenache Blanc is one of those wines that blew my socks off! Yes, for South Africans, the Grenache Blanc grape variety is a rare one, but it is rather common France and Spain (known as Garnacha Blanca).

In the glass, this wine has a golden-yellow colour with a light green hue. The aromas jump out of the glass and this wine is complex: lime peel, apple blossom, lemon, vanilla and stone fruit. It has an elegant entry of honeydew melon and unripe mango, then showcasing lime peel, lemon curd, apple blossom, dried peaches, roasted nuts and a very distinct taste of ginger biscuits. What I really enjoyed when I presented this wine at a tasting, was that you do not need a lot of imagination to taste the fruits and ginger in this wine – they are very distinct.

The complexity of this wine is not overwhelming, it simply makes this a really great wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with some sea bass, chicken satay or Moroccan tagine. It needs to be served chilled well. If you have not tried this wine before, I strongly suggest that you do. It is a wine not to be missed, and it comes at a fantastic price. This is certainly one of my favourites and an overall best-seller.
