Niel Joubert The Proprietor Malbec 2015

The Proprietor Malbec from Niel Joubert is one of their flagship wines, and for a good reason. It is a 100% Malbec that has been matured for 36 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels, with some further bottle ageing before release. It is a great expression of the variety that will please a large crowd of red wine drinkers!

In the glass, this wine has a deep garnet colour. The nose is complex with black fruit, red fruit, and mixed spices. For me, the nose gave me a dual feeling: one of being a child again and the other of something way more serious. This was due to the complexity of the wine on the nose and palate. The entry is soft and elegant, developing slowly on the palate with some blackcurrants, red berries, dried dates, Christmas cake, toffee sauce, cloves, cinnamon, sweet vanilla pod, pink pepper and candied orange peel. Although complex on the palate, it is not overwhelming and leaves you lingering for more. It has a fresh and fruity finish.

This is a great wine to be enjoyed on its own, or with main meals that are beef-based, or even baked desserts. It is certainly worth its price. It does not need to be decanted yet and can easily age well for the next 10-15 years.
