Do you remember the once-dominating coffee style Pinotage wines that were a craze a few years ago? Whether you are a fan of that or not, I suggest you read this! The name of this wine very aptly describes what is in the bottle: a coffee bean (koffiepit) Pinotage. It is not a simple Pinotage but also not a heavy mocha or cocoa style Pinotage, it is right in the middle! The coffee bean presence is merely a hint in the taste profile of this easy-drinking wine which is extremely light and fresh.
Nuy Wineries sent our wine club this Koffiepit Pinotage for our November tasting. It was a 2021 vintage, thus still young and light ruby in colour. On the nose, it is forthcoming with black plum and raspberry. The entry was very smooth with a slight sweetness on the tongue, developing into a well-balanced wine with medium acidity and secondary hints of coffee beans extracted from wood contact. It works very well slightly chilled and will go well with red meat and vegetables (or just before dinner).
Like many grapes from that area, the grapes are picked quite ripe, resulting in fruity and jammy wines. I was really pleased to try this wine that covers the best of both worlds. It is a must try!
