Overgaauw Cape Vintage 1998

Overgaauw is well-known for their Port-style and Bordeaux-style wines, making history in 1992 when they became the first South African producer to bottle a 100% Touriga Naçional Port-style wine. This wine is a blend of Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca, Cornifesto, Souzão, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Naçional. These grape varieties were planted on the recommendation of prof Perold who is best known for creating the Pinotage variety.

In the glass, this wine has a ruby colour with a dark centre. It is forthcoming on the nose with notes of molasses, plums and cigar box. The entry on the palate is elegant and it quickly develops on the palate to show its full capability to tantalize the taste buds and spread in a balanced way over the palate. It is a complex wine and still appears to be young. It has a long finish of honey and ripe red fruit.

This wine should be served chilled, but the label does not do well with an ice bucket, so it is recommended to chill it in a fridge. The cork was fragile and it is best to remove it with a cork puller. It can be enjoyed on its own or with a baked chocolate torte. The 1998 vintage is a bit young to drink now and it would probably show its potential better in about 10 years, but will keep well for another 30+ years. Overgaauw has a nice selection of vintaged wines that can be bought from their website.
