Overgaauw Tria Corda 2019

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Overgaauw Tria Corda is an iconic South African Bordeaux-style blend since 1979, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vines of this wine are about 28 years old and this wine expresses the climate and terroir of Stellenbosch very well.

In the glass, this wine expresses a ruby to garnet colour with black fruit, red fruit and spices on the nose. It has a bold entry of a complex blend that is still young, with grainy tannins. It is black fruit dominant, with black berries, blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar and violets. It has a long and intense finish of black fruit.

This wine spent 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% new and 20% 2nd fill. However, it is still a young wine that need a bit of time to develop further and might be optimal to drink within the next five years with an ageing potential of 15-20 years. The availability of older vintages from the Overgaauw online wine library will give you an idea of how great these wines age over time, as well as the possible ageing potential of this vintage. This wine is a good investment at a good price and a great wine to use for vertical tastings. It will pair well with a leg of lamb or beef roast.
