The Quest Old Vine Chenin Blanc is a leg of the Du Toitskloof Wines, situated in the Breedekloof Valley. This area has a unique terroir for Chenin Blanc specifically, with high rainfall and sandy shale soils, nestled in between old river beds. The label and bottle already hint towards a classic wine, so expect a well-oaked Chenin Blanc when you pull the cork of this bottle.
In the glass, it has a very promising colour with a deep gold-yellow colour. When I presented it at a tasting of Chenin Blanc wines, comments were: "Wow, this wine has colour!" It is very forthcoming on the nose with perfume, peaches and litchis. It is complex and structured on the palate, with peaches, pineapple, green melon and a hint of vanilla. A quick note of walnut is evident before a fruity finish, ascribed to the ageing in French and American oak. This wine is slightly higher in sugar than most other Chenin Blancs, but it gives the impression of sweetness through the fruit-forwardness of the wine.
This is an excellent wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for a good 10 years or more. It should be served chilled well. This will be a great wine with smoked ribs, roasted chicken or trout. This wine is true value for money! This wine is available from Partners in Wine.
