The Southern Treasures Pinotage is the maiden wine and vintage from the Akkedisberg Boerdery, with vines planted on a piece of land that was rented from Raka. After growing grapes for Raka for some time, they decided to bring out their own label. The name "Southern Treasures" was created to refer to the people who made this project possible: the farm workers on Akkedisberg.
Apart from a strikingly beautiful bottle, the contents of the bottle are just as impressive. It has a deep ruby colour with a slight purple hint towards the edge. The nose presents complex flavours of ripe red fruit, spices and earthiness. It delivers well on the palate from the nose, with cranberries, plums, black cherries, strawberries, black pepper and oak spice. It is fresh throughout and ends with a long finish of spice and dry forest leaves.
This Pinotage is a crowd-pleaser and the fresh but ripe fruit-forward style in which it was made is really contributing to its success. At a recent tasting, this was the one wine that received the most positive commentaries of the red wines. It is value for money and only 5033 bottles were produced.
This wine can be enjoyed on its own but will also go well with duck breast, oxtail or venison barbeque. I trust that the other vintages that will follow this wine will be just as good, that the sales of this wine will change people's lives and that it will prove its ageing potential of a good 10 years or more.
