The Stettyn Merlot is one of those truly value-for-money red wines. It has a garnet colour with a lighter rim and offers some red fruit and perfume on the nose. It has a soft entry with fine tannins and a good balance of fruit, acidity and tannin. A combination of red fruit such as red cherries, tinned strawberries and ripe raspberries are prominent, with hints of black fruit such as plum and blackberry. Herbal notes linger on the palate with the finish and a light cigar box flavour is evident.
One of the Decanter Wine Club members recently won the “Wine for a year” competition of Stettyn and I could see how her face lit up when she recognised the wine in her glass as from Stettyn. This wine has a medium to high alcohol level and is a fresh wine to enjoy before a meal or with some breaded chicken or a vegetarian pizza. It will also work with some mild to strong cheeses. The ageing potential of this wine is about 5 years. It is suggested to lightly chill this wine before enjoying.
