After we had a tasting of the Thelema wines recently, the marketing manager informed me that he would also like to present a tasting of the Sutherland wines to our wine club. I haven't tasted any of their wines at that point in time and I thought that it might be worthwhile to wait for the tasting to explore their wines. However, when the Sutherland Sauvignon Blanc 2020 was announced as one of the winners in the FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc wines in 2021, I decided to put my 2019 vintage in the fridge. We had it just before a braai on a warm summer afternoon, while the clouds were gathering in the skies.
This wine has a lovely light yellow colour and is not shy on the nose - it promises to be fruity but delicate. It was exactly that. After many serious Sauvignon Blancs from Cape Town with prominent green pepper and freshly cut grass notes I recently had, this elegant and fruit-forward Sauvignon Blanc was welcomed and competitive with some of the other, really good Sauvignon Blancs. Strong notes of passion fruit, green apple and lime develop into a balanced minerality on the palate and it lasts for a good time.
Sutherland is one of the farms of Thelema Mountain Vineyards, situated about 9km from the Atlantic Ocean at 140-230m above sea level. It is situated along the Helshoogte Road and this 100% Sauvignon Blanc is made at the estate in Stellenbosch. The influence of the sea and the cool climate assist with a good acidity. The vines were planted in 2003-2005, they are therefore optimally expressing their fruit characteristics. Fermentation takes place in Stainless Steel tanks.
This is a really good and refreshing white wine, ready to drink and enjoy straight away.
