The Wildekrans Barrel Select Cabernet Franc 2021 is a 100% Cabernet Franc from Bot River, produced by a relatively young estate whose first wines were released in 1993. Many people are not aware that Wildekrans produces a Cabernet Franc, but it is certainly something to explore if you enjoy the farm’s wines. It certainly is unique in the sense that cool climate Cabernet Francs are not easy to find.
In the glass, it shows a dark garnet colour. The nose is forthcoming with a combination of black fruit, red fruit, spice and characteristic fynbos notes. On the palate, it has a soft entry, developing into flavours of blackcurrant, red and black cherries and ripe plums. Additional notes of cranberry, graphite and a subtle herbal edge add complexity, while the tannins remain soft and well integrated. It finishes with a medium length, remaining soft and fresh throughout.
This is a well-balanced and approachable Cabernet Franc that performed very well in comparative tastings, often standing out as a favourite. Although it is positioned at a slightly higher price point for the variety, it still offers good value for money. It can be enjoyed on its own or with food such as roasted meats, lamb or a hearty stew. A slight chill is recommended before serving, and there is no need to decant. The wine has the potential to age well for up to 15 years.
