The Winshaw Estate The Fox Cabernet Sauvignon was named after Gideon Johannes Joubert, who was nicknamed “The Fox” due to his fox stamp to mark fruit deliveries at the cellar. It spent 20 months in French oak barrels of which about 18% are new oak and is another great product by the renowned Lukas van Loggerenberg.
This wine has basically everything that one wants in a Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, from the fruit profile, the wood, alcohol, acidity, and to top it all: a good price. In the glass, it has a deep ruby colour and offers some red fruit, vanilla and spices on the nose. It delivers well on the palate, with a soft entry of red currant, blackcurrant, fresh plums, dark cherries, vanilla pods and oak spices. The tannins are well integrated and not overly prominent, with a slightly powdery yet elegant mouthfeel. It has a good structure, with a great balance between the fruit, acidity and high alcohol (14.5%). It has a long finish of red fruit and spices, bringing forth a hint of polished leather.
This wine should be served at room temperature and it will do well in a large red wine glass. It is ready to drink now or within the next ten years. It is exceptional value for money and a truly great wine that everyone should try at least once! It is also a great tribute to Gideon Johannes “The Fox” Joubert.
