"I smell the sea" - the regular phrase of one of our club members when she gets an aromatic white wine. I am curious to know what she will say about this wine. The name of this Sauvignon Blanc is extremely accurate: the grapes were not only influenced by the sea, they also have a direct sea salt characteristic!
This wine was brought under my attention when I bought wine at a local shop, packed them in a Sea Salter box, and the owner complimented me on a good and popular choice. I saw on the Groote Post website that they are making this wine since 2018. I went back out of curiosity and tried a bottle after a long day of renovations at our new house and before a braai at friends. If I knew what I know now, I would've bought multiple cases of it!
The Groote Post vineyards are less than 10 kilometres away from the Atlantic Ocean, located close to Darling in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Due to the cooling winds in this area, they harvest their Sauvignon Blanc grapes up to 4 weeks later than the inland wine farms in the near vicinity. Their wines are thus fresh, fruity and high in acidity.
The entry of this wine is smooth and sweet, and it develops beautifully on the palate into a well-balanced combination of green apples, fresh asparagus, freshly cut grass, green peppers, nectarines and lychees. A prominent Darling minerality (from the micro-climate and oakleaf soils) is evident and the wine ends with a salinity on the tip of the tongue and lips.
This wine is very well-balanced and complex: the Sauvignon Blanc contributes to the minerality and green fruits, softened by the Sémillon that adds the stone fruit characters. It is an excellent wine, my top white wine for 2021 from South Africa, and I can highly recommend it for any occasion.
