Nuy Barbieri Idro 2015

Writer's picture: Jaco MeyerJaco Meyer

The Nuy Barbieri Idro dessert wine is a special edition in addition to the standard Muscadel – which I believe should be part of any good wine cellar. This wine meets the perfect intersection between muscadel and port-style wines, to meet the taste profiles of a large group of people who appreciate sweet wines. This wine pays tribute to the Italian prisoner of war, Barbieri Idro (POW number 184412) by naming the wine after him and indicating his prisoner of war number on the neck of the bottle. Barbieri Idro passed away when he was busy loading Muscadel barrels on a train.

In the glass, it has a deep garnet colour with a velvety viscosity. It is forthcoming on the nose with dried fruit, raisins and sweet oak spices. It is delicate on the palate, with a soft and sweet entry, slowly developing in a complex wine with raisin characters, dried apricots but still with a zesty acidity. It is very well balanced on the palate and has a soft finish with sweet oak spices. This is a result of the five years that this wine spent in oak barrels.

This velvety and complex sweet wine is the ideal finish to a good meal and will pair well with chocolate mousse, cheesecake and a variety of other desserts. Nuy makes brilliant sweet wines and this one should not be omitted when trying out some new sweet wines. Not only does it tell a bit of history, but it also pleases the palate in a gentle but firm way.
