Nuy Red Muscadel 2021

Since I can remember, my dad had a few bottles of Nuy Red Muscadel ("Rooi Muskadel") in the cupboard, and those were only taken out at very special occasions. I believe that he is still hiding an old vintage there somewhere, despite of getting two cases of new vintages for his birthday last year. Although Nuy wines make various white and red wines, their best-known wines are their sweet wines. I recently saw a 2011 vintage on the shelf of a very exclusive restaurant.

The 2021 vintage comes in a beautiful clear bottle where you can immediately see the bright red colour of the wine. In your glass, the muscat notes, cranberries and strawberries come through on the nose. Instead of a burning alcohol smell, you get a lot of fruitiness that points directly to the sweet muscadels. It is only when it hits your palate, that this wine distinguishes itself from its counterparts. You have a soft entry with mulberries and raisins, developing into some great rooibos. It finishes off with a light floral taste and does not linger long, getting you ready for the next sip.

I presented this wine at two tastings so far and every tasting results in special mentioning from guests about how great it is. At R80 a bottle, you will struggle to find something of this quality. This is a really great sweet wine that is a must try!
